GETTING IN FOR THE GOINGS ON

Another complaint I have heard is that wheelchair bound and other disabled have to enter the back of the city hall here in Lynn to access services. Symbolically that necessity is laden with negative innuendos. Personally, I am not happy with the message that sends.

BUT

It is an OLD building, an example of beautiful architecture. Making amends among all that marble would be cost prohibitive. The whole thing is like raising teenagers, PICK YOUR BATTLES.

SIMPLE SOLUTIONS

It has been brought to my attention there is a problem with access to the FARMERS MARKET here in Lynn. It seems that the present location poses a difficulty in navigation for potential wheelchair customers. A suggestion given to me for an acceptable resolution to the problem would be to cover a pathway with rubber mats. Like they used to say on STAR TREK, "Number 1, make it so".

COMMON CAUSES

To me much of the line between disabled and non disabled community gets blurred when it comes to mobility/access issues. Everybody spends time in a baby carriage and requires the same ease of access as wheelchairs and walkers. The  purchasing power of these combined constituencies make this designation not just proof of civic responsibility but good economic sense.

GUILTY PERCEPTIONS

Lately two experiences have highlighted to me the lack of respect the disabled community faces. We need to get a new prescription for our "rose-colored" glasses.

Wednesday I was treated like a criminal from the police for being a parent and telling my 13 year-old daughter she could not have something. Granted I have trouble communicating and that should be painfully obvious to any observer. I did not appreciate being ambushed from the get go.

Yesterday I was berated by a court officer for not correctly reading the date on a court document. This was after hours of going through hoops with at least four opportunities to catch my mistake. That same court officer who berated me was involved in two of those opportunities.

It's just frustrating when people who are supposed to be sensitive to our plight are the worst offenders.

EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS!

We as a community of disbled citizens need to participate. Waiting for the accomadations to come to us will only extend the delay until our full participation. ENGAGEMENT is the answer. It worked for Ghandi, it worked for Martin Luther King, it will work for us. Start a movement, get out and vote on election day!

MOVING RIGHT ALONG

Not until, we, the disabled community get more involved in the activities of our community will we ever be truly recognized as equal citizens not just under the law but having the law behind us. That means participating in everything from community events to political elections.

In order to do that TRANSPORTATION is vital. We have to get where we want to go, need to go, whether it is school, shopping or a church picnic. This is not just a federal issue, a state issue or even a city issue. It is a community issue, a Ward issue.

That is why the election of CEFARINO ROSA, CANDIDATE FOR WARD 4 COUNCILMAN is so important. Being a retired MBTA employee, CEF has invaluable and unequaled experience in these matters.

LYNN DISABILITY COMMISSION TO MEET

Tomorrow at 5 pm in Room 302 at city hall will be the regular monthly meeting of the new LYNN DISABILITY COMMISSION.
